Election Aftermath

Bush won by a fine margin.

Democrats are depressed, but their failings were clear. Bush won on addressing a narrow band of 'moral' issues, having a resolve and clear, if not simplistic, case on the war on terror and the war in Iraq. It seems that 59 millions Americans identify with simplicity.

The democrats need to go back to basics, "grass roots" as much as I dislike that term. They need to build up a position and clarity that middle America, the fly over states can identify with. It won't be easy, but they need to do it ASAP.

As an observer here in the US during the race I have to throw my hands up and say, based on no cheating being done (paranoia hey...) that Bush won fair and square. Yet I would also say that democracy is a complex beast and this divided country has some serious healing to do.

I wish America the best, I do love this country and enjoy it immensely, just like I love the UK. Perhaps influenced by living for so long in both I've been lucky to have the perspective I do - not that its exhaustive or elite by any means.

America is an experiment. The first real democracy and a young country finding its way.
